Remember the true or false questions on tests back in our school days? Some were easy and some were harder to figure out. At times it seemed like the questions were being worded to try to trip us up or create confusion and uncertainty. We knew we had a 50:50 chance of getting it right and would make our best guess. We may not be taking these formal exams anymore, but we are definitely having to decipher what is true or false on a daily basis in this school of life. To make it more confusing, different people and groups have vastly different opinions about what is true and what is false. And now we have to consider whether something is real or AI. So how can we find the real truth and have certainty about what is true?
Jesus said, “If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” (John 8:31-32) “Behold, You desire truth in the innermost being, And in the hidden part You will make me know wisdom.” Psalm 51:6
In the Bible, the word truth is used alongside words like lovingkindness, integrity, peace, justice, righteousness, sincerity, meekness and mercy. For example: “Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne; Lovingkindness and truth go before You.” (Psalm 89:14) So, it would seem that if you are looking for the truth and credible sources, you should look for these other qualities and actions. As we approach an election, let’s remember that leaders should be “men[or women] who fear God, men[or women] of truth, those who hate dishonest gain.”(Exodus 18:21) We do not want it to be said of us: “This is the nation that did not obey the voice of the Lord their God or accept correction; truth has perished and has been cut off from their mouth.”(Jeremiah 7:28)
Over the past few weeks, Hurricanes Helene and Milton had a deadly and devastating impact on the southeast United States. It has been heartbreaking to see the damage, hear the stories, and imagine the long road to recovery for so many in these hard-hit areas. Individuals, groups, first responders, companies, and government agencies have responded quickly to provide aid, to locate and rescue those who are unaccounted for, and to assist in the re-building process. This is heart-warming to see and gives hope that we can get through even the toughest of times together.
Unfortunately, there are some who immediately began spreading lies about this tragedy and hoped to gain politically from the situation. These lies are having devastating effects and causing unnecessary mistrust and even violence against aid workers. How can we tell that they are lies? Because they are attacking those showing lovingkindness, and they have been refuted by the people, including Republican governors, who are in the middle of the destruction seeing what is happening with their own eyes.
Dan Rather wrote: “I want to make sure everyone understands the distinction between misinformation, which is an unintentional omission or untruth, and disinformation, deliberately misleading information with the intent to manipulate.” Disinformation has been weaponized and has already caused so much harm to America and other parts of the world. We must get better at recognizing what is true and at denouncing the outright disinformation that is tearing us apart. We can then speak the truth in love and help each other find light in the darkest of times.
Optional— Keep reading for some additional words from the Bible on this subject:
“Do not let kindness and truth leave you; Bind them around your neck, Write them on the tablet of your heart.” Proverbs 3:3
“Justice is turned back,
And righteousness stands far away;
For truth has stumbled in the street,
And uprightness cannot enter.
Yes, truth is lacking;
And he who turns aside from evil makes himself a prey.
Now the Lord saw,
And it was displeasing(or evil) in His sight that there was no justice.” (Isaiah 59:14-15)
Paul the apostle wrote: I “implore you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing tolerance for one another in love, being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is ….one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all. But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ’s gift…. we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming; but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ, from whom the whole body, being fitted and held together by what every joint supplies, according to the proper working of each individual part, causes the growth of the body for the building up of itself in love.”(Ephesians 4)
